Thursday, the public was invited to the grand opening of the Nebraska Innovation Campus Conference Center.

Chancellor Harvey Perlman shared some words with those touring the building, saying, "It (Nebraska Innovation Campus Conference Center) has extraordinary features and I think it's well designed."

The conference center houses a banquet area, auditorium and some meeting rooms.

"This will be a facility that will be regarded as an amenity for the companies on innovation campus but also an amenity for this community and the state of Nebraska," says Perlman.

The state building was paid for by a grant from the Nebraska legislature and is being run by the Nebraska Alumni Association.

Carrie Myers with the Alumni Association says, "We've been involved kind of through the process of construction and it's been really fun to see it all come together."

This is the first completed building on the old state fair grounds.

The goal for the innovation campus is to help private sectors and the university, join forces in water, food and fuel.

Community engagement and operations manager, Kate Engel, says, "Lots of activities out here that involve students, the community, the university, we're really looking at the culture of innovation campus as a place where people who might now normally run into each other... Have that opportunity to run in to each other."

The Nebraska Innovation Campus Commons Area will be the next space completed.

The Food Innovations Center is scheduled to open next summer.

When it's all said and done, Innovation Campus will have more than 2 million square feet of research, meeting and office space with up to 5,000 people working there.
