Three UNL students were hanging out inside their apartment when they were forced to evacuate after it filled with smoke.

"There's a lot of smoke in there," Haopng Yuan said. "We almost choked in there so we just came out."

Fire crews were called to the Chateau Apartments near Vine and Cotner just after 9 a.m. Tuesday. They say smoke was coming from the building when they arrived.

Officials say a construction crew working on the complex was using a torch when a part of the structure between the first and second floors caught on fire.

"It was a little bit slow in that we couldn't initially see the fire and whenever it's in a void space, it takes a little bit longer cause you got to open up that void space and then look in there and find out where it is," Asst. Chief Pat Borer said.

Fire crews used a thermal imaging camera to locate the fire and were able to put it out.

All the residents in the building were evacuated. Many of them watched the action from the parking lot.

The three UNL students tell us they just arrived from China Monday, now they may be moving into another apartment.

"I just feel unlucky," Yuan said. "Actually we just got everything moved in yesterday."

Fire officials estimate damage to be around $10,000.

No one was injured.
