Taxi drivers in the Capital City are on high alert after another person is robbed on the job. This is the third cab driver robbery since last Wednesday.
Lincoln Police say a driver with Happy Cab was lured by phone to make a pickup near 16th and C streets just after midnight when two men approached him.
"An unknown male hopped into the back seat, he was armed with a hand gun, pointed it at the driver and demanded money," LPD Ofc. Katie Flood said.
The suspects got away with the driver's wallet, cell phone and tablet. Police say the case is similar to two other robberies that happened last week in the same neighborhood. But that's not the end of it.
"Around the same time we've also had three robberies to delivery drivers for pizza," Flood said.
All of the incidents happened just blocks from each other in the Near South area. Police officials say they've stepped up patrols, and are working to track down the suspects.
"It is very concerning," Cornhusker Cab driver Halley Hansen said.
Hansen has been a driver for almost five months. She says the recent robberies have re-emphasized the importance of her safety rituals.
"By taking simple safety precautions I think you can prevent a lot of problems including locking your doors and windows and remaining alert at all times," Hansen said.
Hansen says she also carries various weapons for protection.
Happy Cab managers say they're being extra watchful when drivers are dispatched to the targeted area. They're encouraging employees to keep on driving if they don't feel comfortable making a stop.
