A city beautification project meant to take a few months has stretched into a year.

Business owners along P street are counting down the days until construction is over.

An effort to widen sidewalks and add more green along P Street has closed down lanes and torn up sidewalks from 11th to Centennial Mall since last fall, in addition to the east side of 14th from O to Q. The project has been more than just an eyesore for area businesses; some say they've struggled for months to get customers in the door. Manager of Threads, Doran Hadan, says a blocked off sidewalk led people to think the store was closed.

"I mean we had to put a sign in the window saying that we're open," Hadan said.

Plus, Hadan says the staff has put in extra work to keep the customers coming.

"We just did extra sales and extra advertising and spent more money to get people to come in so, yeah it's really affected us," she said.

Down the street, The Coffee House is also feeling the pressure.

"The city really didn't prepare us for this project, there's no fund available to help us," Owner Mark Shriner said.

Shriner says sales are down by 50 percent, and he's scraping the bowl to keep his shop open.

"It's borrowing off credit cards, it's maxing out every resource I have," Shriner said.

P Street project managers say construction should be 99 percent finished by August 29. That means all lanes and on-street parking should be open. But, it could be another month before construction wraps up for good.

City developers say it was a delayed start and bad winter weather that held up the process. They say the construction company, Hausmann Construction, will be fined beginning August 30 for every day they continue to work past deadline.
