Thousands of students filled the University of Nebraska–Lincoln's campus Sunday for the Big Red Welcome festival.

While this may have been the official kick–off to the school year, freshman Austin O'Brien has been on campus all last week—– he's one of the newest members of the Cornhusker Marching Band.

"The experience is so surreal," O'Brien said. "I can't believe it!"

O'Brien has been playing the piccolo for years, and now he can inside Memorial Stadium.

"I'm just getting to continue my love for the performing arts, it's amazing," he said.

Music filled campus as students had a chance to check out everything the college has to offer.

The first impression from the freshmen?

"Pretty overwhelming!" Libby Schuman said. "There's a lot of people!"

"Being one of the biggest classes is pretty exciting!" Ashley Priest added.

As for O'Brien, he admits he's a little nervous, but...

"I'm ready for it," he said. "I'm ready for everything to just happen."

Classes begin tomorrow. The first home football game is August 30.
