As police continue to investigate the murder of 21-year-old Maurice Williams, friends and family remember him for his kindness, positivity and a smile that could light up a room.
Just before 1 a.m. Saturday, Lincoln Police were called to the LionsGate Apartments near 50th and Vine streets on reports of a shooting. Police say Williams, the victim, died shortly after from his injuries.
"It's been three days and I'm just waiting for him to walk in," girlfriend Ashton Morris said.
Morris says they were hanging out together in their apartment moments before Williams, known as Moe, was shot. She says the suspects barged into the apartment and forced her into the bathroom.
"I didn't see it, he shut the door, but I could hear," Morris said.
She says the rest still doesn't seem real.
"I just kept thinking so hard that they would let me go and I would go to the hospital and just hold his hand and we would survive this," she said.
But Williams died before Morris could get there.
The couple made plans to go to California and chase their dreams- hers in fashion, his in music.
"It was just inspiring the way he talked about everything and he'd just like tell you to go for it, so supportive," Morris said.
Williams had turned his life around from a troubled past, Morris says. He was going to school at Southeast Community College and working two jobs, but she says it was his ability to lift people up that made him so special.
"Everyone talks about his smile, his positivity and his optimism," Morris said, "you just could never meet somebody like that, he just completely changed my world."
Police still haven't released any new information. They're still investigating the case and haven't made any arrests.
The Williams family is taking donations to help pay for funeral services. You can donate online on their Fundly site.
