The University of Nebraska is welcoming a new face. Stancia Whitcomb Jenkins fills the role of diversity officer for the system. One goal for the position is to grow diversity in staff and students across all campuses.

"I have always appreciated everyone's background story, who you are where you come from what type of experiences you have because that makes for richer dialogue richer personal development,” Whitcomb Jenkins said.

They also hope to make it easier for social and racial minorities to approach the college system. For one senior on Lincoln’s campus the addition to the administration is exciting.

He believes change starts from the top down.

"I did feel like I was included so an inclusive environment, it was challenging as a first generation, low income student, first from my family to even graduate college and even attend college just to navigate the whole university system but there are times when it doesn't feel inclusive on campus like when you may be the only minority student in your class,” Adoni Faxas said.

Whitcomb Jenkins hopes to make the university a place everyone in Nebraska can be proud of. She wants to make sure people from all walks of life have a place on campus, adding that the work is never done. She says changing social climates in the United States make her position even more relevant.

"We are respectful that everyone has a place and an opportunity to be their best because this is really a developmental stage for students that attend here so I’m really interested in any organization or effort that will move that along and make that community feel more at home on our campus,” Whitcomb Jenkins said.

The position had previously been dormant. President Hank bounds decided to have it filled, after taking over in 2015.
