It's been almost a week since Hurricane Matthew ripped through Haiti, but we're learning more of its destruction.

Kieran Wilson has deep roots with the island.

His grandmother lives in Les Anglais within the southern peninsula, which was not too far away from the eye of the storm.

"It was just terrifying not being able to speak with her for a couple days not knowing if she was ok.  It was really hard to deal with,” Kieran Wilson said.

Wilson later learned she was OK, but her community was ravished.

Many people are struggling to get food and water as well as access to communication.

With hundreds in the country dead and millions in desperate need of help, Wilson said people often forget how powerful these storms can be.

"A category 4 isn't as devastating for Florida as it is for Haiti. I think that was one of the things made it tough to keep seeing it getting stronger and stronger and stronger,” Wilson said.

Wilson adds this devastation comes not too far after another natural disaster.

Haiti was rocked by a massive earthquake less than a decade ago and was just starting to rebuild.

"For a country to have all those problems to have the earthquake, then the hurricane, it's just so sad to see that happen to people who already have enough of their plate to deal with,” Wilson said.

Wilson's mother also has a school in Les Anglais, which was also damaged.

He and his father are currently raising money for a trip to help with relief efforts.

"It's just a feel like I owe a great debt to that community and I can't sit around here while people over there are suffering,” Wilson said.
