A man is behind bars after attacking an LPD officer. Police say the officer saw 42-year-old Juma Sikeyo cross O Street near 9th around 3 a.m. Sunday. He was going against the light, so the officer got out to make sure he was okay.

Police say the officer saw he was highly intoxicated and attempted to take him to detox, at which point they say he punched at the officer and ripped the man's gear off his uniform.

"He smelled the odor of alcohol determined him to be intoxicated the man didn't want to go and a fight ensued and he ended up striking the officer several times," Officer Matt Stegman, Lincoln Police, said.

During the fight, two good samaritans jumped in to help and all three were able to take Sikeyo into custody. He's in prison for 3rd Degree Assault, Failure to Comply, and Resisting Arrest.

"Some people decide to help out and some people choose not to and that's their right, but it is helpful that someone decided to jump in and assist us instead of pulling out a video recorded and yelling or starting another disturbance in the background and in this case the two people decided to he help the officer and make an arrest," Stegman said.

LPD is thankful their officer is okay.

"Well I'm just proud that the officer used his training and experience and handled the situation and avoided a very serious encounter where it could have turned out worse for him or worse for someone else," Stegman said.

Unfortunately, as quickly as the good samaritans were there to help, they vanished.

"Well someones stronger than you, lot quicker than you you know we're human we're not professional athletes. And maybe you do get hit or knocked to the ground, and assistance from someone else is always much appreciated," Stegman said.
