Nebraska's Jessica Shepard was among the 50 women's basketball players around the nation named to the Naismith Trophy Women's College Player-of-the-Year Preseason Watch List by the Atlanta Tipoff Club on Wednesday.

Shepard, a 6-4 sophomore forward from Fremont, Neb., is averaging 17.8 points and 9.8 rebounds per game for the Huskers, who carry a 3-3 record to unbeaten Virginia Tech (6-0) to take on the Hokies in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Thursday at 6 p.m.

Shepard has scored in double figures in all six games for the Huskers, including a pair of 20-point performances. She also owns two double-doubles.

Last season, Shepard advanced to the Naismith Midseason Top 30 before being named the 2016 Big Ten Freshman of the Year. The two-time Nebraska Gatorade High School Player of the Year (2013, 2014) was a first-team All-Big Ten selection a year ago and was a Preseason All-Big Ten choice entering 2016-17.

Shepard was one of nine players from the Big Ten on the 2017 Naismith Watch List, joining Indiana's Tyra Buss, Northwestern's Nia Coffey, Michigan's Katelynn Flaherty, Michigan State's Tori Jankoska, Maryland's Brionna Jones and Shatori Walker-Kimbrough, Minnesota's Carlie Wagner and Ohio State's Kelsey Mitchell.

Other Naismith candidates the Huskers will face this season include California's Kristine Anigwe (Sunday, Dec. 4, Pinnacle Bank Arena), UConn's Napheesa Collier, Kia Nurse, Katie Lou Samuelson and Gabby Williams (Wednesday, Dec. 21, Pinnacle Bank Arena) and Missouri's Sophie Cunningham (Nov. 14, Pinnacle Bank Arena).

The 2017 Naismith Midseason Top 30 will be announced on Feb. 8.
