A nearly $646,000 federal grant will pay for research into how law enforcement works with rural schools across Nebraska on safety and emergency preparedness.

The research will be led by the University of Nebraska Public Policy Center, working with the Nebraska Department of Education.

"If you look at urban and suburban schools they'll have a school resource officer who may either be imbedded in a school or multiple schools in a community," said Dr. Mario Scalora with the Public Policy Center. "Rural schools do not have that luxury.

Researchers will use Education Department data, crime statistics, census data and survey results from law enforcement and personnel from more than 150 Nebraska schools to examine strategies being used and develop ways to increase engagement and safety.

"People do find ways to work together even when they're stretched thin," Scalora said. "Law enforcement in rural areas is doing a lot to keep their community safer, but they're not going to call it by a fancy program name."

The study wants to find what works and use it as a model for other districts.
