Hundreds of people came to celebrate the life of former Nebraska Congressman and Governor Charles Thone Tuesday at the Cornhusker Marriott in Lincoln.

Charles, better known as Charley, died March 7th at his home. He was 94 years old.

He had a successful career, and even played integral roles in the investigations into the assassinations of both Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and President Kennedy.

Thone was an advocate for true bipartisanship in the government, but those who know him closest say it's what he did outside of politics that mattered.

"He was a very rural Nebraskan at heart and he loved Nebraska and he loved serving people in Nebraska and he had just such a very big heart," longtime friend and coworker Mark Schorr, who emceed the memorial, said.

Thone's family was especially honored by all who attended, a list which included former Governor Kay Orr and incumbent Governor Pete Ricketts.

"He was extremely proud to serve the people of Nebraska, a state he loved with all his heart," daughter Ann Thone said. "An all consuming love."
