A man reported a safe containing thousands of dollars in cash and valuables was stolen from his Belmont area home Tuesday, a police spokeswoman said.

Officer Angela Sands said the 59-year-old man told police he came home from work around 6 a.m. and noticed the safe was missing from his living room.

Inside the safe were rings, including a diamond engagement ring valued at around $10,000, cash, a passport and other items, Sands said.

Police estimate the total value of the items to be around $13,000.

The man's roommate told police they thought they had locked the house when they left.

Sands said there were no signs of forced entry.
