An explosion has claimed the lives of a Valley, Nebraska couple.
That's just west of Omaha.
Authorities say Leonard and Illa Doherty were killed when their house exploded in flames.
Neighbors up to 10 miles away say they were awoken by a loud sound similar to a firework explosion at around 5 am Wednesday.
And many say once they were on the scene it was like nothing they had ever seen before.
A loud bang is how many neighbors describe the noise they awoke too early Wednesday morning.
And after running outside to see what was going on...what they saw they say is almost undescribable.
After getting a call around 5:30am firefighters were shortly on the scene trying to contain the blaze...and hoping to keep it far from a nearby propane tank.
The house was standing when they arrived however debris that scattered hundreds of feet slowed down their work.
The house belonged to 69 year old Leonard, better known as "Wayne" Doherty and his wife Illa.
Wayne was a school bus driver for Waterloo Public Schools for 18 years.
George Conrad who worked with Wayne says he will be missed.
Investigators are looking into whether a propane gas leak caused the explosion.
Neighbors told me,the family just had a repairman at the house yesterday to check out a possible leak.
At this point though, still no official word on the cause.
