12-year-old dropped off at Omaha hospital

Omaha police are looking for relatives of a 12-year-old boy who was dropped off at a hospital, raising questions about whether his family tried to use Nebraska's old “safe haven'' law.  Police say the boy was left at Creighton University Medical Center early Monday.

Police say the boy told officers his mother and grandparents drove him to the hospital, dropped him off and drove away. The boy was taken to Project Harmony, a center that helps abused and neglected children.

Nebraska approved a “safe haven'' law in 2008 that was designed to protect newborns from being abandoned. It didn't include an age limit and led to a rash of older children being left at hospitals. The Legislature then added a 30-day age limit to the law.
