2 Huskers Selected In MLB Draft
(Lincoln-AP) — Two University of Nebraska players will trade in their Husker jerseys for a chance to play professional baseball.
Left-handed pitcher Justin Pekarek and second baseman Jake Mullinax were chosen Monday in the 2004 Major League baseball first-year player draft.
Pekarek was picked by the Cleveland Indians in the eighth round. His selection marks the sixth straight year a Husker has been chosen in the first 10 rounds. Pekarek was a former walk-on for the Huskers. He earned second-team all-big 12 honors in 2004, going 8-and-1 with a 3-point-16 e-r-a in 74 innings of work.
Mullinax was drafted in the 14th round by the St. Louis Cardinals. He also was a second-team All-Big XII selection by the league coaches after batting .313 with eight homers and 34 RBI this spring.
