6-Year-Old Nebraska Hero

Police are praising a 6-year-old boy who grabbed the wheel of a pickup after his dad passed out from low blood sugar and drove until a North Platte officer halted the truck. Tustin Mains was in the back seat with his 3-year-old brother when he noticed that his dad had slumped down Sunday evening.

Tustin hopped up to his father's lap and took over. His dad's foot had slipped off the accelerator, but even at idle the pickup was going 10 to 15 miles an hour. After a few minutes officer Roger Freeze spotted the truck. Freeze ran up to it, reached in through the driver's side window, grabbed the gearshift and rammed it into park.

Tustin admitted he'd been frightened but was sure happy after the officer brought the scary ride to a safe end. ___
