Lincoln police arrested a homeless man they believe broke into the AARP office downtown and caused thousands of dollars in damage.

Police say they started receiving phone calls from inside the office, located at 301 S. 13th Street, right around 8:30 Saturday night. They say it sounded like a man was having a nervous breakdown. When they went to check on the office, it was locked and the lights were off inside. Then, officials say the fire alarm went off just after 9 p.m. When officers returned, they found 37-year-old Curtis Holmstedt standing outside the nearby Cornhusker Hotel. Police say he was wet and had blood on him, consistent with blood they found smeared inside the AARP suite.

Officers arrested Holmstedt, who is listed as a transient, for burglary. Police say there was around $20,000-worth of damage done due to the sprinklers flooding the office. They say Holmstedt didn’t take anything from the office.
