Abortions Down In Nebraska

The state says more than 15 percent fewer abortions were performed in Nebraska last year than in 2006. Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services figures show it was the fourth straight year of decline.

The department's annual report says 2,481 abortions were reported in Nebraska in 2007, compared with 446 in 2006. The state says of the 2007 total, it was the first abortion for 66 percent of the women, the second for nearly 24 percent, the third for nearly 7 percent, the fourth for 2.3 percent and the fifth for nearly 1 percent.

The total has been dropping since the high of 6,346 in 1990. The report says 194 of last year's abortions in Nebraska were performed on women from Iowa and 41 on women from South Dakota.
