Avoca Man Killed by Authorities After Lengthy Standoff

An Avoca man is dead following a morning long stand off at his home. Authorities say it began early Friday morning after a call to authorities. Twenty eight year old Mahlon Wolfe was shot and killed after walking out of his home in Avoca. Cass County officinal says he was firing a small gun. Investigation is still pending, but authorities and family members believe had been drinking.

Many family members travelled to Avoca after learning about the incident. Wolfe's family wouldn't go on camera but they told Channel 8 Eyewitness News they agreed with the way the situation was handled. But it was an unfortunate ending. Battling a recent divorce and custody battle of his four year old son Alex, family members say Wolfe was often depressed. Neighbors say they were unaware of deeper problems.

Wolfe lived in a home by himself with his dog. One of his brothers say they heard from him Thursday night and could tell something was wrong. His neighbors have known Wolfe for the past year. They say they've never had problems with him.

Family members say they are now trying to make funeral arrangements. One of his brothers told me, although the family lived in different towns, they were all very close.
