Ban on Late Term Abortions Clears US Senate

The ban on the so-called “partial birth abortions” cleared the US Senate Thursday. The measure passed 64-to-33.

Nebraska Senators Chuck Hagel and Ben Nelson also voted for the ban. President Bush has promised to sign the bill once it reaches his desk.

Channel 8 Eyewitness News contacted Planned Parenthood and they told us in a statement quote, “Planned Parenthood opposes the partial-birth abortion ban legislation because it bans safe and medically appropriate methods of abortion and puts women's health at risk.”

We also talked with Julie Schmit-Albin with Nebraska Right to Life and she said, quote, “Nebraska Right to Life is pleased that the Senate has passed the ban once again. And the House is expected to follow suit.”
