Beck talks offense at spring practice
The Huskers continued with their spring practice on Monday afternoon as they practiced outside in Lincoln's great spring weather for just over two hours on the Ed and Joyanne Gass practice fields. The Huskers were in helmets and shorts.
After their second practice of the spring, offensive coordinator Tim Beck spoke with the media about the offense.
With Nebraska's no-huddle offense, a fast tempo is key for the Huskers, and Beck said he's liked the tempo throughout the two practices so far, including today.
“I think the tempo has been good. We're being pretty crisp for the most part,” Beck said. “I kind of expected that. We've only played two months ago. We played a lot of guys, and maybe some guys didn't play as much, but a lot of guys got enough reps to be in the system to kind of know what we're doing.”
Beck said that he wants to have a more balanced attack this season and because of that, he's going to have to mix up the playing calling some.
“We have to mix it up,” Beck said. “I think offensively you need to because it's going to help our run game. We were very efficient in our play action pass last year. It was high percentage with a very big gain per catch. We feel like we got to do more of that.”
The big talking point during the offseason and the first two days of camp has been quarterback Taylor Martinez's mechanics. Beck said he's looking for improvement in the depth of the drops Martinez is taking, but that he's seen improvement and thinks his mechanics have been excellent so far.
“They're excellent. He's really working on the things he needs to work on that we've identified in the offseason,” Beck said. “He's put the extra time in and you can see the conscious effort in doing it. It's helping him.”
The Huskers will continue with their spring practice on Wednesday afternoon. Wednesday's practice will mark the last practice of the week for the squad as they get a 12-day break for Spring Break. Continue to check back to Huskers.com throughout the spring for all your spring football updates.
