Bill Could Save Lives Of Newborns

Lawmakers are hoping a new bill will save the lives of some babies. Parents could leave unwanted infants at designated sites without legal repercussions under a bill discussed by a legislative committee Wednesday. Those sites are called save-havens. Right now, Nebraska is one of only 4 states in the country that does not have a safe haven law. Safe-havens would be places where newborns could be left anonymously. Firefighters, E.M.T's, church staff, and hospital workers would be classified as safe-haven providers. Under the bill, the person leaving the newborn at a safe-haven would not be guilty of child-abuse for leaving the child. The judiciary committee will need to vote on the bill before it goes to the floor for debate.
