Bird Flu Plan

While the nation is planning for a possible national pandemic of the bird flu state and local government officials are also preparing.

They've been meeting and planning for over a year now.

State officials say Nebraska is leading the nation in making their plans.

They say a pandemic flu outbreak will happen.

The question is when.

Both the state and local level are preparing.

Doug Alhberg say's Lancaster County's essential services, such as water, electricity and gas, will all be taken care of.

Alhberg say's those people who are key in running the city will be quarantine within their buildings.

Then emergency management systems will take care of not only them, but their families as well.

Lincoln Lancaster County Health Department Director Bruce Dart says in the worst case scenario.

They say 40 to 50 percent of the workforce will be out sick.

They also say it's best if people stockpile enough water, food and necessary medication for a week.
