Bryan LGH Health Report: Pulmonary Hypertension

A specialized clinic in Bryan LGH East can treat a common but often overlooked disease.

Pulmonary Hypertension causes shortness of breath and affects the heart when blood vessels in the lungs are inflamed.

Doctors haven't found a cure, and the disease usually gets worse over time.

Except for one patient who said she wouldn't let the disease take over her life.

Now she's off oxygen and doing better thanks to treatment at Bryan LGH.

Doctors say don't overlook the mild symptoms of pulmonary hypertension.

“A lot of people think it has something to do with asthma or a cold, but if you go to the doctor and they rule out those things, and you're still not satisfied with that answer, pursue pulmonary hypertension, because it is a hidden disease,” said patient Brenda Petrzilka

“The symptoms of Pulmonary Artery Hypertension are subtle, but the primary complaint is shortness of breath, so if you have shortness of breath talk to your primary care taker about your concerns,” said Dr. John Trapp.

Bryan LGH is one of only two hospitals in the state with a special clinic just to treat pulmonary hypertension.
