Campaign race heats up nationally, locally

The honking of a car is something Jason Johnson is going to have to get used to.

The Arizona native is drawing quite a bit of attention with his merchandise stand at 33rd and Cornhusker Highway.

What’s he selling?

"I’m just out here bringing Trump merchandise to the masses," Johnson said.

That’s right – nothing but Trump.

Trump shirts, Trump hats, Trump buttons – he has all of it.

Johnson is part of a nation-wide group that wants to see Donald Trump elected president.

He says he is enjoying his time in Lincoln, where he’s kept busy at his stand – both with customers and hecklers.

"I’ve had both sides, and I’ve had that in every state and every country," Johnson said.

"You’ll go, you know, to southern California, and you’ll have just as many people there supporting Trump as did bad mouth him. So it’s the same all over the country."

Just a few hours later, at 14th and O, a gathering of Hillary Clinton supporters packed into Main Street Bar.

It’s where the Omaha-based group Hillary for Nebraska is launching a new Lincoln branch (Lincoln for Hillary).

The group’s main goal is to increase campaign efforts for Clinton in the state’s second congressional district.

They say they want to educate people and let them make an informed decision.

"Find the information, don’t just go by hearsay, don’t go by the sensationalism of media, but go by what’s really truth," Ed Aken, who attended the meeting, said.

"Search that out – and then I don’t think people will be on the fence."

But torn somewhere between Trump and Clinton are people like Elaine Sanley, who says she knows enough about both candidates to know she’s not voting for either one.

"I am 72 years old and never have I seen anything like this," Sanley said.

"This is a lot of derogatory going on and really the issues are not being touched upon."

Johnson’s stand will be open at 33rd and Cornhusker through Labor Day.
