NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (AP) _ The Lincoln County sheriff says a diver has reached a car that carried two teenagers into the rushing waters of the South Platte River in western Nebraska.

But Sheriff Jerome Kramer said Tuesday that the car can’t be recovered until the river recedes. Hydrologists say the river is expected to reach flood stage late Wednesday or early Thursday.

Officials have said 17-year-old Alexis Wiezorek and 18-year-old Noah Ramos have been missing since May 18, when they drove into the river, which had washed out a road on the south side of North Platte.

Kramer says the diver could see only silt inside the car but was able to remove a piece of the car’s vinyl top, which allowed officials to confirm the car is the one driven by Wiezorek.
