CGS Deadline is Wednesday June 29th

The final deadline to register for most sports in the 2011 Cornhusker State Games is Wednesday, June 29.  Officials said more than 8,000 Nebraskans are registered and entries are on pace to top 12,000 for the 27th annual sports festival for Nebraskans of all ages and abilities.


The Games offer competition in more than 60 sports and those interested can register or find more information at or by calling 402-471-2544.


Entry highlights…


–Entries have been received from 81 of Nebraska's 93 counties thus far.  Volleyball currently has the most entrants followed by closely by soccer and basketball.  Organizers are happy with the entry numbers thus far in the new sports of skateboarding, which has 19 registered entries, and pickleball, currently at 34.  The CSG Bass Brawl, a new addition to the fishing events, has 40 participants registered.  A handful of sports have already eclipsed 2010 numbers, including Horseshoe Pitching, with 53 entrants, shore fishing, with 24 and the Games largest individual-entry sport, volkswalk currently at 505.


Other notes of interest…


–CSG youth trapshooters and the general public will be treated to an extreme shooting exhibition by eight-time world record holder Patrick Flanigan during the youth trapshooting competition on Sunday, July 17.  Flanigan, a native of Oshkosh, Wis. who recently appeared on the Outdoor Channel's Impossible Shot program has donated a Mossberg Silver Reserve 12-gauge over/under shotgun as a raffle prize to benefit the youth shoot.  Those interested in purchasing raffle tickets for the gun can email or call 402-471-2544.


–Athletes and guests at the CSG Track & Field meet at Lincoln High School on July 16 will have an opportunity to learn why high-level athletes including Apolo Ohno, Chris Bosh and Shawn Johnson all use chocolate milk as a workout recovery drink as the national Refuel With Chocolate Milk Tour makes a stop in Lincoln.  The Tour team provides free benefits for athletes, including: samples of lowfat chocolate milk from Roberts Dairy, massages, the famous Milk Mustache photo booth, tips from athletic trainers about the recovery benefits of chocolate milk, and behind the scenes footage of famous got milk? athletes mentioned above.


–Lincoln East leads all schools with 233 favorite-school votes in the CSG School Spirit Awards competition.  All Lincoln High Schools are still in the running for cash awards in their respective divisions, as are Raymond Central, Wahoo Neumann, Fairbury, Creighton Amherst and Wilber-Clatonia.  The program, sponsored by the Nebraska State College System and member institutions Chadron State, Peru State and Wayne State, provides funding to high schools based on CSG participant votes.
