Congressman Doug Bereuter Will Not Seek Re-election

After 14 terms in Congress, Congressman Doug Bereuter says he's not going for a 15th. The Republican holds the title as Nebraska's longest serving representative in the US House. Congressman Bereuter hasn't had a difficult time keeping his seat in Congress. The 14 term Representative has won re-election every two years and never getting less than 60 percent of the vote.

Tuesday, the congressman held a news conference to talk to reporters about his plans for re-election. You may remember that Bereuter has expressed interest in becoming the next president of the University of Nebraska filling the spot left by the approaching retirement of L. Dennis Smith.

But Tuesday he wouldn't discuss those plans. Bereuter's decision to vacate his seat is creating a scramble in both the Democrat and Republican parties. But the Nebraska representative felt the time was right.
