Could A Special Session Be Called?
A decision on whether lawmakers will return to Lincoln for another special session probably won't come until later this week. That was the word Monday from Governor Mike Johanns. He's considering calling a special session to make clarifications to Nebraska's death penalty laws, which are under scrutiny by the courts as possibly being unconstitutional.
The Governor met Monday with prosecutors, state senators and Attorney General Don Stenberg to discuss the situation. Johanns said he wants to poll sate senators to see if there is enough support for the special session.
State Senator Gene Tyson of Norfolk began calling for the session in the aftermath of the killings of five people at a Norfolk bank.
