Teacher and coach sentenced for assaulting students

A former teacher and coach in the Doniphan-Trumbull school district in east central Nebraska has been sentenced to probation for assaulting two students.

Twenty-seven-year-old Dale Kavan, of Doniphan, was charged in incidents at the school in October 2008 and April 2010. He pleaded guilty in January to three misdemeanor counts of third-degree assault. Kavan quit his job before the school board could decide whether he should be fired.

Kavan was sentenced on Tuesday in Hall County District Court to two years of probation. He was also ordered to pay over $1,400 restitution to one of the students.
