Democratic gubernatorial candidates responds to investigation

The campaign of Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mark Lakers is denying accusations of false campaign finance reporting. Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning announced Wednesday that his office is investigating after several people complained that their names were falsely included on Lakers' most recent accountability and disclosure reports.

Lakers did not immediately respond to Associated Press requests seeking comment. But his spokesman, Chris Stokes, says the campaign is convinced that all the pledges it's reported “are accurate and correct.'' Stokes also questioned why Bruning _ a Republican _ would contact news organizations about the allegations before contacting Lakers or his campaign.

Bruning has worked closely with fellow Republican Gov. Dave Heineman, who is expected to win next Tuesday's primary and face Lakers in the November election.
