Doane Football – Meier and Reeves Named All-Americans

On Tuesday, the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) in conjunction with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) released the 2016 NAIA-AFCA Football All-American Team.

Doane football placed two players on the Second Team All-American list. Nate Meier (SR/Pierce, Neb.) was joined by one of his lead blockers as Zach Reeves (SR/Central City, Neb.) also received the honor.

Meier had a record breaking year, setting the single-season Doane rushing record as well as the single-game record. In Doane’s win over Hastings on Homecoming Weekend, Meier rushed for 291 yards to set the single-game record. After a 157-yard rushing game in the NAIA Playoffs, Meier finished the year with 1,590 yards for the single-season mark. He scored 15 touchdowns on the season and finished with 38 rushing touchdowns for his career.

For the season, Meier finished third in the NAIA in rushing with 144.5 yards per game. He ranked seventh in the NAIA in all-purpose yards with 1,943 yards. Meier finished 16th in the NAIA in scoring with 90 points.

Reeves helped anchor an offensive line that ranked 15th in the NAIA in rushing yards per game with 225.2 yards per game. Doane was also 15th in scoring offense with 35.7 points per game. Reeves and the Tigers ranked 27th in sacks allowed with 1.6 sacks per game. The team was also 39th in total offense with 394.4 yards per game.

The Tigers closed the season ranked No. 7 in the NAIA and qualifying for the NAIA Football Championship Series playoffs for the second straight year. Doane closed the season with a 9-2 record and second place finish in the Great Plains Athletics Conference (GPAC).
