Doane Matches Win Total from Last Year

Doane picked up the 10th win of the season on Saturday afternoon with a 66-61 win over Mount Marty College in Yankton, S.D. The victory was the first for the Tigers in Yankton since the 2007-08 season and only the fourth all-time as Doane is now 4-9 on the Lancers' home court. The Tigers are 10-1 overall and 3-1 in the GPAC while Mt. Marty is now 4-5 overall and 1-3 in the GPAC.


The Tigers opened the game with the first four points only to have the Lancers come back and tie the game at 6-all. Mount Marty took their first lead on a three-point play by Joe Hieb. Doane responded with back-to-back lay-ups from Connor Beranek and Nick Reed to regain the lead, 10-9.


A 6-0 run by the Lancers gave Mt. Marty their largest lead of the game, 15-10. Beranek followed with a three-point back and a jumper to tie the game for Doane. The baskets sparked Doane to a 22-6 run as they took a 32-21 lead with 5:36 remaining in the first half. The Lancers were able to cut the lead to eight points at the break, 37-29.


Mount Marty controlled the early stages of the second half, out-scoring the Tigers 12-4 in the first seven minutes as the lead was cut to a basket, 43-41. Doane's next six scoring possessions were all three-point players, five made shots from behind the arc and one conventional three-point play. Nick Reed and Domonique Smith scored six points apiece in the run as Doane went up by 14 points, 61-47.


The final 90 seconds saw Doane miss 3-of-4 from the free throw line as Mt. Marty cut the lead down to three points. Reed was able to convert two free throws with 11 seconds remaining to close out the scoring.


Mount Marty was able to get back in the game behind offensive rebounds, out-scoring Doane 19-5 in second chance points. The Tigers' advantage came from behind the arc, out-scoring the Lancers, 27-3.


Doane was led offensively by Beranek and Smith as they each posted 20 points in the game. Smith was 7-of-11 from the floor and 4-of-7 from behind the arc while Beranek was 5-of-10 from the floor with three baskets behind the arc and seven free throws. Reed added 14 points. Beranek recorded seven of Doane's 22 rebounds in the game.


The Lancers received 16 points from Saladin Smith and 12 from Austin Harms. Jeff Larsen came off the bench to pick up seven rebounds while Scott Odekirk and Chris Richardson had six apiece.


The Tigers will take on Midland University on Wednesday, December 5, at 8:00 PM in Crete. The Warriors joined Doane on Saturday as the only teams to defeat No. 3 Dordt College this season as they won, 97-89.
