Doane Ties Team Modern Era Record with 93-85 Win

A first half burst by Doane College led to a 93-85 victory over Graceland University in the opening game of the Hastings College Classic on Friday afternoon in Hastings. The victory improved the Tigers' overall record to 8-0, tying the mark they posted to open the 2000-01 season. Eight wins to open a season is the school record during the modern era (1985-86 with introduction of the shot clock) and also the most in the Doane records that date back to 1956-57.
The Tigers opened the game with the first two baskets made but it was the Yellowjackets who held a 12-7 lead just five minutes into the game. Enter in Domonique Smith for Doane. Smith scored 26 points over the next 15 minutes before halftime, outscoring Graceland by himself during the stretch. The Yellowjackets posted 20 points over the final 15 minutes.
Smith wasn't the only Tiger to have first half success. Connor Beranek posted 11 points as eight players scored in the half for Doane. The Tigers led 53-32 at halftime. The team shot 60-percent in the first half, led by Smith's 8-of-9 performance as he was 6-of-7 from behind the three-point arc.
Graceland had the hot hand in the second half as they rolled up 53 points. They shot 51-percent in the second 20 minutes of play and hit 6-of-12 from behind the arc. Doane, was held to 48-percent in the half from the floor and 0-of-7 from three-point range. The Tigers were able to post 40 points in the half as they converted their free throw opportunities, 14-of-17.
Nick Reed scored 14 second half points, going 5-of-5 from the floor while Beranek added 11 points. The Yellowjackets were able to cut the lead to six points with 30 seconds remaining following a three-point basket by Alex Roth. Reed and Beranek each converted two free throws in the final seconds to secure the win.
For the game, Smith led all scorers with 28 points. Beranek added 22 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Reed totaled 16 points and Shavontae Samuels posted 12 for the Tigers as the duo led the team with five assists apiece. Jens Scholl joined Reed with team-high honors in steals with three apiece.
Graceland had five players in double figures, led by Roth's 17 points and eight rebounds. Drew Emmert added 16 points with Trae Patton finishing with 15 points and five assists for the Yellowjackets.
Doane will face off against Bethel College (Kan.) on Saturday at 2:00 PM in Hastings.
