Dog saves Omaha man from house fire

A Ralston man says his dog alerted him to a fire at their home, giving both of them and two cats time to escape without injury.

Firefighters were called to the home around 4:45 a.m. Tuesday. Chief Kyle Ienn says the resident, Jeremy Craft, told them his home had a smoke detector, but he didn't hear it. Ienn says Craft and his animals all escaped through a ground-floor bedroom window in the two-story, wood-frame structure.

Flames gutted the house. Ienn estimated it a total loss of more than $100,000. He says investigators are still trying to determine what caused the fire.

The chief also says one of the two dozen firefighters who fought the blaze was hospitalized for heat exhaustion but was expected to recover.
