“Dogs Add Outfielder from Chico

The Saltdogs acquired dual-threat outfielder Jake Rife from Chico (North American League) for cash and a player to be named later Monday.

Rife, a former Los Angeles Angels farmhand and Pac-10 standout, hit .343 with 13 home runs, 71 RBI and 24 stolen bases in 85 games for the Outlaws in 2011.

The Everett, Wash. native also stroked six triples, scored 68 runs, and posted an outstanding 1.019 OPS.

“[Jake] looks like an exciting young player with a great mix of power and speed,” Saltdogs manager Chris Miyake said. “He's a solid fit for us.”

Rife bats and throws left-handed, and boasts a .320 career batting average in three professional seasons. He was drafted by the Los Angeles Angels in 2009, and hit .301 in 112 games at three different levels for the Halos organization.

The 24-year old excelled collegiately at the University of Washington, batting .328 with six home runs and 39 RBI his senior season for the Huskies.

The Saltdogs made two other transactions Monday, releasing RHP Jordan Stern and C Wes Smith. Stern went 2-4 with a 6.08 ERA in 22 games, including one start. Smith went 1-for-5 with a double in limited action this past season.
