Dr. LeRoy Carhart Takes The Stand In Late Term Abortion Hearings
The doctor who led the fight to strike down Nebraska's ban on an abortion procedure testified Thursday. Dr. LeRoy Carhart of Bellevue took the stand in his challenge of the federal late-term abortion ban act. He said that he doesn't understand the language in the ban, saying it's too vague and it could take on several different meanings.
The late term abortion ban was signed into law by President Bush last year. But, in court Thursday, Dr. Carhart said he doesn't believe politics should handle what happens between a doctor and patient. He also told prosecutors the ban would limit nearly all abortions.
Carhart's lawyers rested their case Thursday. The government will present its case next week. There are two other late-term abortion cases going on right now in New York and California.
