Thousands of Lincoln residents came out for an event all about rejoicing in freedom. Those who attended also got to learn about healthy living.
Today was the 32nd annual Juneteenth celebration. It's a festivity to honor President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, which put an end to slavery in the U.S.
Healthy living was one of the main themes this year, residents got to take health screenings, donate blood, and learn about healthy food and drink choices. Organizers say knowledge is power. “I think one of the important things we see, especially with our young people, and just generally…obesity. I think it's important that we combat obesity as best we can. And in addition, high blood pressure has always been an issue in our community…with the African American community,” Organizer Larry Williams adds.
Healthier living was a main theme at today's event. It ties into our Healthy Kids Healthy Families campaign… You can catch it here weekly on Channel 8 Eyewitness News.
