Wednesday, some local fifth graders took part in their first field trip of the year.

Students and teachers headed to the ball park.

It’s an annual tradition for the Lincoln Public Schools.

LPS fifth graders have been going to an annual Saltdog’s game for the past eight years.

Each fall, about 3,000 fifth graders head to a Lincoln Saltdog’s game.

It’s a fun experience for students. Matt Avey with LPS says it also includes some valuable lessons in character, sportsmanship and fun.

"All of our students have some character education integrated into their curriculum on a daily basis and this gives them an opportunity to participate in some of that character education not just through theory, but through practice at the ballpark,” said Avey.

"It just gives us an opportunity to like get out and move around and have fun and come to a baseball game," said fifth grader McCray Anderson.
