UNL’s literary journal, The Prairie Schooner, is celebrating a huge birthday. This week, the publication is turning 90!
"While other journals had periods of going out of business for a while or slowing down, maybe a war, or The Depression or something like that, prairie schooner for 90 years has published quarterly- 4 issues a year, non-stop for 90 years," says Editor-In-Chief Kwame Dawes.
The journal is one of the 10th oldest literary journals in the United States. The journal is edited and published at UNL. Prairie Schooner publishes essays, poetry, and fiction from writers across the county.
While students can’t write for the publication, they can work as editors and publishers each semester.
"Many of our alumni from here who have read for Prairie Schooner, who have edited for Prairie Schooner have gone on to have careers as writers and editors. So it’s a great incubator for writing. It’s a professional outlet, so they get incredible experience working here," says Dawes
Pulitzer Prize winners and Nobel Laureates have been published in the Prairie Schooner before.
