Exmark In Beatrice Furloughs 175 Workers

With demand down, Exmark Manufacturing announced this week it will temporarily shut down its Beatrice lawn mower plant, affecting 175 full-time employees.

Exmark, a division of Toro, routinely stops production temporarily each summer, though company officials said this shutdown is significantly larger than those in the past.

Toro spokesman Branden Happel said most employees could start returning as early as September.

In April, Exmark laid off 80 full-time employees and all seasonal workers. It said more layoffs were likely in August.

Before the cuts, the plant employed 437. Toro also announced cuts of salaried positions Thursday.

Happel couldn't provide an exact number. Nebraska Workforce Development received reports of 15 permanent layoffs.
