Fairbury woman enters plea in husband’s murder

A 54-year-old Fairbury woman has pleaded not guilty to murdering her husband.

Susan DeJong made the plea Thursday in Jefferson County District Court. She's charged with first-degree murder in the beating death of 52-year-old Thomas DeJong, formerly of Alexandria, S.D.

Rescue squad members were called to the DeJong residence about nine miles west of Fairbury on March 11. They found Thomas DeJong, who was severely beaten on the head, torso and limbs. He was pronounced dead later at a Lincoln hospital. His wife was arrested the next day. Court documents say she told detectives that her husband tried to kill her two years ago, saying “I caught him doing it.'' Her trial is scheduled to begin Aug. 29.
