Fans react to athletic director’s support of Pelini

Fans had mixed reactions after learning about Nebraska athletic director Shawn Eichorst's support for Bo Pelini Saturday.

After Nebraska's loss against the Iowa Hawkeyes, Pelini used foul language in the post-game press conference Friday when referring to a personal foul the referees handed him.

Pelini's statement combined with his emotional response to Friday's officiating during the game has left some fans upset.

“That's a terrible impression for the face of your program to give on national TV,” Trent Peterson said.

“You can't essentially take a swing like that in the direction of a referee,” Travis Kliewer added.

But other fans sympathize with Pelini's role as head coach and said it's inevitable that coaches will get heated at times.

“I think it's passion, and I like to see passion from a coach,” Daisy Burgan said. “So if that's what passion means, I'm for it.”

“Nobody's perfect,” Steve Brettmann added. “He needs some improvements on things.”

The loss against the Hawkeyes was certainly a tough one. But even as the athletic department tries to squash the rumors, fans seem more divided than ever.

“I think that it's not a positive step to retain Coach Pelini,” Kliewer said.

“I understand the pressure,” Jeff Judkins said. “And I think he's doing a good job.”

In Pelini's public apology released Saturday night, Pelini said he and his staff remain focused on preparing the Huskers for a bowl game. That game is yet to be determined.
