Fewer West Nile Virus Cases This Year
With all the rain we've had in our area this summer, you'd think West Nile virus would be more severe than ever this year. However, that's not the case. Last year more than 2300 people were known to have been infected by the mosquito-borne virus in Nebraska. This year there has been only one confirmed human case of West Nile in the state. State Disease-Control Specialist Tom Safranek says less hot weather this summer may be a factor. Only a certain type of mosquito carries the West Nile virus, and it particularly needs warm water to breed.
