Freshmen lead Huskers in Michigan

Kate Smith and Annie Sritragul tied for eighth with two-over-par scores of 144 in two rounds of stroke play at the East & West Match Play Challenge in Ann Arbor, Mich., on Sunday.Smith, a freshman from Detroit Lakes, Minn., closed the 36-hole day with a two-under-par 70 in the second round to produce her second round better than par through five rounds to open the season. It followed an opening-round 76 on the par-72, 6,292-yard layout at Radrick Farms Golf Course.Sritragul, a freshman from Bangkok, Thailand, matched Smith stroke-for-stroke through 36 holes, including an opening-round 72 and a 74 in the second-round.With the two freshmen leading the way, the Huskers tied for sixth with a two-round total of 600 in a loaded eight-team field in Ann Arbor. Ohio State produced the top team score in stroke play with a 575, while Kentucky finished second at 578. Those two teams will occupy the top two spots in championship bracket play heading into match play on Monday. Wisconsin earned the No. 3 seed in match play with a 582, while Oregon claimed the final spot in the championship bracket with the No. 4 seed at 583.Ohio State will face off against Oregon on Monday, while Kentucky takes on Wisconsin.The hosts from Michigan earned the top seed in the consolation bracket with a 598, ahead of No. 6 Penn State and the No. 7 seed Huskers, who will play each other head-to-head in Monday’s match play round. UC Davis settled for the No. 8 seed at 605 and will take on the fifth-seeded Wolverines Monday.In addition to the pair of impressive top-10 efforts from the Husker freshmen in a 48-player field, Nebraska senior Sarah Pravecek tied for 29th at 151 (79-72). Junior Emily Gillman added rounds of 79 and 78 to finish at 157 in a tie for 38th.Freshman Claire Robertson managed a 160 (81-79) to finish 46th, while junior Audrey Judd played as an individual outside of the Husker lineup and produced a 158 (80-78) to tie for 43rd.
