‘Golf Fore the Troops’ raises money for soldiers

Today men and women from around the region made their way to help raise money for our troops.

On another hot day with highs near 100 degrees, over 100 golfers gathered at Firethorn Golf Course for the 6th annual “Golf Fore the Troops” tournament.

Twenty-six golf professionals from the Nebraska section of the PGA paired up with golfers to help raise money for military personnel and their families who have served since 9/11. The Nebraska Color Guard performed the presentation of the flags followed by the National Anthem to remind everyone what they were playing for.

Randy Borg said he enjoys participating in the tournament every year knowing he is supporting our troops. “I've got friends in the service, my father served, my grandfather was killed in action in World War II so it means a lot to me,” said Borg.

Most of the money raised goes to scholarships and they come from sponsors such as Nelnet, UBS, Papa Johns and Time Warner Cable. “To date, after this year, we'll be close to $80,000 in scholarship money raised so it's been a great event,” said Jim White, Nebraska Golf Pro.

The golfers were able to enjoy their time out on the fairways knowing they were doing it for a good cause. “My favorite part of the tournament was playing with the guys and knowing that we're supporting our troops, I'm very adamant about that,” said Borg.

An auction on their web site, www.GolfForetheTroops.com, will run through Friday with all of the money going directly to scholarships. Items to be auctioned off include Husker memorabilia, sporting event tickets, gift cards and golf accessories.
