Grand opening of the Community Crop Veggie Van
Posted By: Jason Taylor
LINCOLN, Neb. Lower income Lincoln residents now have access to convenient and affordable produce.
The Community Crops Veggie Van is located at the new Health 360 building on 23rd and O street. It’s a mobile farmers market that sells fresh organic produce locally grown from the community crops training farm. Program manger Ben McShane–Jewell says this is an innovative way to bring healthy food to people who need it the most.
"It’s right in the core of the city. It’s in an area where there isn’t a lot of access to fresh produce. So we’re using funds that we receive from Community Health Endowment to allow us to run this project. But also the customers who come with their Food Stamp or EBT cards we’re giving them half off everything we’re selling." Said Ben McShane-Jewell, Community Crops Program Manger
He says they have a community sports of agriculture program for several years where they train people to grow produce themselves. He adds it helps the health and economic well being of the city. Health 360 also says this is a great shop to have at their facility not only because of there clients but also the area.
"Because of O street and a lot of traffic we hope to have a lot of nutritional messages along O street for everyone to view. It’s a high population area and it targets a lot of population we want to hit and it’s close to the trail." Said Shirley Terry, COO Health 360
People are also expressing appreciation for it.
"Clients have loved it. People in the neighborhood have come over to the Veggie Van. So there’s a lot of excited about having it in this area." Terry Said
The Veggie Van will continue to be at Health 360 on 23rd and O every Thursday 11 A.M. to 2 P.M. through October.
