It's been a long time in the making, but phase one for the Canopy Street expansion is now under way! It's an eight block expansion of the Haymarket district. And Friday, the developers and city officials got the ball rolling.

Canopy street lies just south of the new Pinnacle Bank Arena. Officials say phase one includes building a hotel and an entertainment district. Best of all, they say it'll be done ahead of schedule.

Another groundbreaking, another great day for Lincoln development. It's taken eight years and millions of dollars in public and private investment. And even though it doesn't look like much now, Canopy street is getting closer to being the talk of the town.

“Our first phase we plan to have open in August of next year, so it is full speed ahead,” Developer Will Scott said.

Phase one consists of a hotel with three floors of luxury condos above. And nearby, you'll find the Canopy Lofts. We're talking five stories of loft-style apartments plus first floor retail space. Last but not least, Lincoln's new up and coming entertainment and dining district, the Yard.

“This is a great vision for Lincoln. It truly has been a culmination of a very long process with grounds for progress,” Wendy Birdsall with the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce said.

Officials say this new development along with the Haymarket arena is just what we need to make living in Lincoln even better.

“It is a great time for Lincoln and a long time going. We appreciate the support and the trust that we can drive this and try to do the best we can for the community,” Scott said.

Developers say phase one should be complete by next August. Once that happens, they'll begin work on phase two.
