(H1N1) Swine flu claims 13 Nebraskans

More than a dozen people died and 536 were sickened by swine flu in Nebraska during the 2009 flu season. The flu count was detailed in a report released Thursday by the state Department of Health and Human Services.

The report says 13 people died in Nebraska between Aug. 30 and May 1, which is considered flu season. The state health agency has attributed two other deaths last summer to swine flu, but they happened prior to the season's start.

The Nebraska report also shows the peak flu season appeared to be in mid to late October, and there were 26 illness-related school closings between Sept. 24 and Oct. 30. About 2,317 students were affected and lost a total of 31 days of school.
